Cigarillos vs. Full-Size Cigars

Walk through our cigars category and you’ll notice the products range from small, quick-smoke cigarillos like Castro Cigarillos to larger, more involved full-size cigars from Backwoods and PrimeTime. They’re related products, but they’re not interchangeable. If you’re new to cigars, here’s what actually separates the two.

Size Is the Obvious Difference, But Not the Only One

Cigarillos are small, generally under 4 inches, and thin, usually less than half an inch in diameter (called the “ring gauge”). Full-size cigars vary more, ranging from around 4 inches up to 7 or 8 inches, with a noticeably thicker ring gauge. That difference changes smoking time dramatically, a cigarillo like Swishers Sweets might take 10 to 15 minutes, while a full-size PrimeTime can run well over an hour.

Size isn’t the whole story either. Cigarillos are often made with a simpler filler and a machine-made or partially machine-made process. Full-size cigars, particularly premium ones, are more likely to be hand-rolled with distinct filler, binder, and wrapper leaf.

Flavour and Intensity

Cigarillos, including our Castro Cigarillos and Swishers Sweets, tend to come in a wider range of flavoured varieties and are generally milder, a common entry point for first-timers. Full-size cigars, especially premium lines like Backwoods or PrimeTime, tend to offer a more layered, evolving flavour profile as different sections of tobacco taste different from the first third to the last.

Reading a Cigar’s Basic Anatomy

Even a casual smoker benefits from knowing the three basic parts of a cigar. The filler is the blended tobacco at the core, and it’s the main driver of strength and flavour. The binder holds that filler together in a tight roll, and while it plays a smaller flavour role, a poor binder can cause uneven burning. The wrapper is the outermost leaf, chosen partly for appearance and partly because it contributes a noticeable share of the overall taste, especially in the first few minutes of smoking. Cigarillos usually simplify this structure, sometimes combining binder and wrapper into a single reconstituted leaf, which is part of why they’re faster and cheaper to produce than a hand-rolled full-size cigar.

Quick Comparison

  • Cigarillos: Shorter smoking time, thinner ring gauge, often flavoured, like White Owl Cigarillos and Castro Cigarillos.
  • Full-size cigars: Longer smoking time, wider ring gauge, more complex construction, like Backwoods and PrimeTime.
  • Both: Made from cured tobacco leaf, intended for adults 19 and older, and best stored properly (see our storage guide above).

Where White Owl Fits In

White Owl sits at the popular middle ground of the cigarillo category, known for consistent flavour and an easy smoking experience. If you’re not sure where to start, White Owl or Swishers is usually a safer first purchase than jumping straight to a premium full-size cigar.

Choosing Between the Two

The right choice comes down to time and occasion. A Swishers Sweets cigarillo makes sense for a quick break. A full-size Backwoods cigar suits an occasion where you have time to sit with it.

A Few Buying Tips

  1. If you’re brand new to cigars, start with a cigarillo from White Owl or Swishers.
  2. Pay attention to ring gauge, not just length.
  3. Store whatever you buy properly, even a short-smoke Swishers Sweets.
  4. Check our sales and deals page before buying in bulk.
